History

The bank was incorporated as one of the very first Australian joint-stock-companies in 1826. It should be the counterpart to the New South Wales Bank. Other than the New South Wales Bank the Bank of Australia did not allow that former prisoners became shareholders or employees. This was the reason why the bank got the nickname “the poor merino bank”.
